During the past year our pupils have taken part in a Boccia tournament which involved deaf pupils from several schools and units across the West Midlands. Although we started well, we didn’t win but everyone had a great day meeting other deaf youngsters as well as working together as a team.
Pupils from the HIU were also able to take partin a visit from the NDCS Big Purple Bus where they learned more about technology which can help access various devices such as phones and iPods. The Purple Bus staff also delivered some deaf awareness lessons to groups of pupils and increased their knowledge of deafness and how best to communicate with deaf people. We hope to welcome the bus again in the near future with the aim of encouraging our deaf pupils to continue to feel included within their mainstream school environment.
In the summer term we took advantage of the sunnier days with a day in Kenilworth. Although not far from Coventry none of our pupils had visited before and they all enjoyed exploring the park, learning how to use a map and getting to know one another better. As our pupils are generally in separate year groups, this type of event is a special occasion and affords a chance to discuss and explore the challenges of being deaf in a mainstream school.
